The Haunting of Dr. Bowen is a novel by a fantastic author whose work I have never been disappointed with. C.A. Verstraete has an unstoppable imagination and she does one thing I admire the most. Research.
In this novel, the author explores the life of Dr. Seabury Bowen, a little known real life Doctor who was involved in the Lizzie Borden murder case in the 1800’s. One thing I really enjoyed about this book was the quotes from the court transcripts from the Borden case at the top of each chapter.
This is not a long book, it’s not a difficult read but it’s written in such a way that it absorbs the reader into the turmoil that is Dr. Bowen’s mind. Throughout the story we follow Dr. Bowen as he tries to uncover the mystery of what is haunting him and survive the nightmarish memories of what he found in the Borden House.
There are scenes in the book which some readers may find disturbing. Verstraete is not a stranger to horror and the imagery in this book is brilliant, and.. creepy!
I would definitely recommend this book, and suggest reading other titles by Verstraete including her book Lizzie Borden – Zombie-Hunter, which focuses on the Borden murders and the trial, but it’s not all she writes about. Also check out her earlier works such as Girl Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie.
Thanks for the review!
