The Write Reads Tour: The Rosewood Chronicles Book 1- Undercover Princess by Connie Glynn

Undercover Princess is a young adult mystery adventure with flavours of The Princess Diaries.

Growing up, I loved The Princess Diaries, the books more than the films but I enjoyed it all as a whole. I loved the transition from awkward teen girl to beautiful princess and even though the films basically made this ‘girl with glasses turns into girl who wears contacts’ it was still thrilling to me.

Now, this is not that, but there are some obvious similarities, for starters, it’s a teen princess story so it wasn’t going to get that far from it, but this time there’s a twist.

Lottie Pumpkin strives to be princess-like always repeating her mantra I will be kind, I will be brave, I will be unstoppable. Arriving at the school of her dreams, dressed up all pretty in pink she is the image of a young princess… except… Lottie isn’t the princess in the story..

I really enjoyed this story, I thought the characters were very nicely put together. I did also find some Harry Potter-esque flavours in here.. three teenagers, away at a boarding school, with some not necessarily nice people, interesting teachers and a lot of time spent in a magnificent library… yeah there’s definitely some inspo going on in there despite it’s non-magical theme.

But it all worked, the story is nicely set up, there is character development, the imagery comes across perfectly. I felt like I was standing in Lottie’s bedroom taking it all in with her.

As much as I mention these other titles having some similarities, it’s far from being a cut and paste reference, it is just that there are similarities but the story is entirely different from both of those.

This book just works and it’s great for any audience. I’m reading quite a bit of Young Adult fiction lately and I’m really enjoying it. This one held some great nostalgia for me and I really appreciated that about it, one thing I will say though, this is far from being as delicate as The Princess Diaries, this one carries a threat and an adventurous excitement that is very addictive. Once you get into this story you won’t want to put it down.

The first thing I did when I finished this book? I bought Book 2, and I intend on reading the whole collection which comprises of 5 books so watch this space because Lottie & Co will definitely be returning to the blog!
