I found this series via the ‘Included’ catalogue in Audible, and honestly, I only actually picked up this one because I wanted to read ‘Bookish and the Beast’ and it turned out to be Book 3 in this series.

But I’m really pleased I did pick it up, this is a fantastically modern spin on Cinderella with a whole lot of Geek thrown in because as the series’ name might make clear – it focusses on a Sci-Fi series and a Convention.

I liked the way the characters were set up in this book, with some having arcs and some.. not learning anything at all actually but that’s the point isn’t it? Some people don’t just change every time something happens, there’s not necessarily going to be an arc for all the characters, some are going to do crappy things and continue to do crappy things.

There’s also some very good representation of the LGBTQ+ community, which I liked, because the Geek/Nerd communities have a lot of people in them so the idea that there wouldn’t be diversity in a bunch of different ways is insanely unlikely.

This story sets up the universe you’re reading about, introduces you to the characters and really paints a great picture of what’s going on. For a book with so many people in it, it’s really easy to follow which is testament to the Author’s writing style.

As I’ve noted, I took the Audible experience for this one and it’s also very nicely narrated. Just as a book needs to be written in such a way you can follow it, it needs to be well narrated too. No narrator will be for everyone, but I need a clear voice that sounds interested in the story. I find it too easy to zone out otherwise and will get a few chapters in and realise I’ve no idea what’s happened. This one however just kept pulling me further in.

I’ve really taken a liking to Young Adult titles lately, and these would have been something I enjoyed at the age it’s more aimed for as well, I’ve always had an interest in sci fi so this would have been, and still is, right up my street. Whilst this is not sci-fi itself it is a strong theme.
