The Write Reads Blog Tour – Lesser Known Monsters by Rory Michaelson

Lesser Known Monsters is a book of many surprises. There was quite a bit that I really wasn’t expecting and that kept unfolding the more I read.

When I first started reading this book I was hooked, I loved the way it was set up and I was even wrong about the way it was going to go, which is great for me because often I guess easily and whilst you can still enjoy the journey it was still nice to be surprised.

The story is quite steadily paced with a selection of characters who felt like they would realistically know each other and have the dynamic portrayed. Also, due to these characters there is a fantastic LGBT representation where, it’s not just that the characters are in that community but they’re all different.

Let me explain what I mean by that. When you read a lot of books, you find that there’s almost a cut and paste approach to Gay representation but this book acknowledges that there is a spectrum to human behavior and I enjoyed that.

I did personally feel that the romantic aspect which is in this book wasn’t really necessary, but it also didn’t pull the reader away from anything, it did add to the plot in ways that a lot of romantic sub-plots do not, so it worked having it there. I know a lot of people, myself included, don’t always feel like these are needed in a story but it’s more just a preference than a criticism.

I had been really looking forward to reading this book and I’m glad I did. I actually checked it out on Audible as well and it’s very nicely read which makes it nice and easy to follow. I didn’t really have a favorite character in this one but I did appreciate the character development and I very much enjoyed the portrayal of the little girl.
